RESUMO

Cutin, one of the main structural components of tomato peels, is a waxy biopolymer rich in hydroxylated fatty acids. In this study, 10,16-dihydroxyhexadecanoic acid (10,16-diHHDA) was extracted and isolated from tomato peels and exploited to develop fully crosslinked polyesters as potential candidates for replacing fossil-based metal protective coatings. A preliminary screening was conducted to select the base formulation, and then a design of experiments (DoE) was used as a methodology to identify the optimal composition to develop a suitable coating material. Different formulations containing 10,16-diHHDA and other biorefinery monomers, including 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, were considered. To this end, all polyesters were characterized through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and gel content measurements to determine their Tg value and crosslinking efficiency. Compositions exhibiting the best trade-off between Tg value, chemical resistance, and sufficiently high 10,16-diHHDA content between 39 and 48 wt.% were used to prepare model coatings that were characterized for assessing their wettability, scratch hardness, chemical resistance, and adhesion to metal substrates. These polyester coatings showed a Tg in the range of 45-55 °C, a hydrophobic behavior with a water contact angle of around 100°, a good solvent resistance (>100 MEK double rubs), and an adhesion strength to steel higher than 2 MPa. The results obtained confirmed the potential of cutin-based resins as coatings for metal protection, meeting the requirements for ensuring physicochemical properties of the final product, as well as for optimizing the valorization of such an abundant agri-food waste as tomato peels.

RESUMO

A redox umpolung strategy for the synthesis of complex tetrahydrocarbazoles is reported. The reaction involves a visible light promoted radical cation [4+2] cycloaddition between 2-vinylindoles and conjugated alkenes that proceeds with good yields and diastereoselectivity.

RESUMO

This work aims to improve the corrosion protection features of poly(phenylene methylene) (PPM) by sidechain engineering inserting methoxy units along the polymer backbone. The influence of side methoxy groups at different concentrations (4.6% mol/mol and 9% mol/mol) on the final polymer properties was investigated by structural and thermal characterization of the resulting copolymers: co-PPM 4.6% and co-PPM 9%, respectively. Then, coatings were processed by hot pressing the polymers powder on aluminum alloy AA2024 and corrosion protection properties were evaluated exposing samples to a 3.5% w/v NaCl aqueous solution. Anodic polarization tests evidenced the enhanced corrosion protection ability (i.e., lower current density) by increasing the percentage of the co-monomer. Coatings made with co-PPM 9% showed the best protection performance with respect to both PPM blend and PPM co-polymers reported so far. Electrochemical response of aluminum alloy coated with co-PPM 9% was monitored over time under two "artificially-aged" conditions, that are: (i) a pristine coating subjected to potentiostatic anodic polarization cycles, and (ii) an artificially damaged coating at resting condition. The first scenario points to accelerating the corrosion process, the second one models damage of the coating potentially occurring either due to natural deterioration or due to any accidental scratching of the polymer layer. In both cases, an intrinsic self-healing phenomenon was indirectly argued by the time evolution of the impedance and of the current density of the coated systems. The degree of restoring to the "factory conditions" by co-polymer coatings after self-healing events is eventually discussed.

RESUMO

Poly(phenylene methylene) (PPM) is a multifunctional polymer featuring hydrophobicity, high thermal stability, fluorescence and thermoplastic processability. Accordingly, smart corrosion resistant PPM-based coatings (blend and copolymer) were prepared and applied by hot pressing on aluminum alloy AA2024. The corrosion protection properties of the coatings and their dependence on coating thickness were evaluated for both strategies employed. The accelerated cyclic electrochemical technique (ACET), based on a combination of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cathodic polarizations and relaxation steps, was used as the main investigating technique. At the coating thickness of about 50 µm, both blend and copolymer PPM showed effective corrosion protection, as reflected by |Z|0.01Hz of about 108 Ω cm2 over all the ACET cycles. In contrast, when the coating thickness was reduced to 30 µm, PPM copolymer showed neatly better corrosion resistance than blended PPM, maintaining |Z|0.01Hz above 108 Ω cm2 with respect to values below 106 Ω cm2 of the latter. Furthermore, the analysis of many electrochemical key features, in combination with the optical investigation of the coating surface under 254 nm UV light, confirms the intrinsic self-healing ability of the coatings made by PPM copolymer, contrary to the reference specimen (i.e., blend PPM).

RESUMO

Two new heteroleptic copper(i) sensitizers bearing 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dibenzoic acid, to anchor the dye on the titania surface, and a π-delocalized 2-(R-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (R = NPh2 or O-hexyl) ancillary ligand were prepared and well characterized. Their performance as dyes in DSSCs is quite similar to that of the related complex bearing 2,9-dimesityl-1,10-phenanthroline as an ancillary ligand, when using the common I-/I3- redox couple or homoleptic copper complexes as electron shuttles. The experimental results along with theoretical calculations confirm the great potential of full-copper DSSCs.

RESUMO

Impressive spin-related effects are observed in cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments performed under an applied magnetic field on a non-ferromagnetic electrode modified with a thin electroactive oligothiophene film, either "inherently chiral" or featuring chiral pendants with stereogenic centres. When flipping the magnet's north/south orientation, the CV peaks of two achiral, chemically reversible Fe(iii)/Fe(ii) redox couples in aqueous or organic solution undergo impressive potential shifts (up to nearly 0.5 V depending on protocol conditions), specularly by changing the film's (R)- or (S)-configuration. The magnitude of the potential shift decreases upon increasing both the polymer film thickness and the distance between the permanent magnet and the electrode surface. Such unprecedented spin-related redox potential modulation, obtained in the absence of a magnetic electrode acting as a spin injector, provides striking evidence (as well as an attractive evaluation criterion) of the spin selectivity properties of chiral thin films.

RESUMO

We have synthesized and characterized a series of bis-(phenanthroline)Cu(i) complexes of interest as redox mediators for dye-sensitized solar cells. This study led to the discovery of intriguing anagostic interactions between the hydrogen atom and the copper center as evidenced by X-ray diffraction studies on a single crystal. Remarkably, an anagostic interaction was found between a H atom of a methyl group and a copper site.

RESUMO

The combination of ß-substituted Zn2+ porphyrin dyes and copper-based electrolytes represents a sustainable route for economic and environmentally friendly dye-sensitized solar cells. Remarkably, a new copper electrolyte, [Cu(2-mesityl-1,10-phenanthroline)2]+/2+, exceeds the performance reached by Co2+/3+ and I-/I3- reference electrolytes.

RESUMO

A tetracoordinated redox couple, made by [Cu(2-mesityl-4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2][PF6], 1, and its Cu(II) form [Cu(2-mesityl-4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2][PF6]2, 2, has been synthesized, and its electrochemical and photochemical features have been investigated and compared with those of a previously published Cu(2+)/Cu(+) redox shuttle, namely, [Cu(2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2][PF6], 3, and its pentacoordinated oxidized form [Cu(2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2Cl][PF6], 4. The detrimental effect of the fifth Cl(-) ancillary ligand on the charge transfer kinetics of the redox shuttles has been exhaustively demonstrated. Appropriately balanced Cu-based electrolytes have been then formulated and tested in dye solar cells in combination with a π-extended benzothiadiazole dye. The bis-phenanthroline Cu-complexes, 1 and 2, have been found to provide an overall 4.4% solar energy conversion efficiency, which is more than twice that of the literature benchmark couple, 3 and 4, employing a Cl-coordinated oxidized species and even comparable with the performances of a I(-)/I3(-) electrolyte of analogous concentration. A fast counter-electrode reaction, due to the excellent electrochemical reversibility of 2, and a high electron collection efficiency, allowed through the efficient dye regeneration kinetics exerted by 1, represents two major characteristics of these copper-based electron mediators and may constitute a pivotal step toward the development of a next generation of copper-based efficient iodine-free redox shuttles.

RESUMO

2,2'-Bis[2-(5,2'-bithienyl)]-3,3'-bithianaphthene oligomers are a model case of electroactive films endowed with "inherent chirality", originating from a stereogenic element coinciding with the whole electroactive backbone, thus resulting in impressive manifestations. This study highlights their applicative potentialities as low-cost and easy-to-prepare artificial enantiopure electrode surfaces, which display an unprecedented ability to pronouncedly separate voltammetry peaks of enantiomers of quite different chiral probes of applicative interest, concurrently with linear dynamic ranges for peak currents, affording enantiomer excess determination. Thus inherently chiral enantiopure electrodes can indeed be regarded as a key to chiral voltammetry.

RESUMO

In the context of the development of new electron mediators for dye-sensitized solar cells that could efficiently substitute the more common I3(-)/I(-) redox couple, we have prepared a series of Cu(I)- phenanthroline complexes through an easy synthetic route. The novel [Cu(2-mesityl-4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)2]PF6 (3) is of particular interest because the presence of the bulky mesityl groups protects as a kiss lock the Cu center, leading to superior dye regeneration kinetics with respect to simpler phenanthroline-based Cu(I) complexes and to a lower dark current with respect the I3(-)/I(-). The exploitation of a dual-component electrolyte constituted by (3) and a Fe(II) comediator, in combination with the [Ru(4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine)2(4,4'-dinonyl-2,2'-bipyridine)](PF6)2 sensitizer, allowed us to increase the performance of the cell, reaching Jsc values of 4.0 mA cm(-2), comparable to that recorded with I3(-)/I(-) (3.8 mA cm(-2)).
